

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Keith Arthur Varela, who left this world on Monday, December 29, 2025, in Charlotte, NC. He was born on June 2, 1957, in Riverhead, NY, and lived a life that was as vibrant as it was fulfilled. Keith's journey spanned 68 years, during which he touched countless lives with his warmth, humor, and steadfast dedication to his family and community.
Keith was the beloved son of Julius and Margaret Varela, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a sense of loyalty that would guide him throughout his life. He was preceded in death by his cherished parents, his twin sister Deborah Hansen, and his mother-in-law, Jeanette DeAngelis, all of whom he loved dearly.
Keith is survived by his devoted wife, Maria DeAngelis Varela, with whom he shared a loving partnership that stood the test of time.
Also left to mourn his loss are three wonderful children: Jordan Varela (Casey Mills Varela), Stephanie Terry (Dustin Terry), and Christine Varela. Keith's legacy continues through his adoring grandchildren, Landon, Dominic, and Sophia, who brought him immense joy and pride. He often remarked that there was nothing more important than family, and he cherished every moment spent together.
Additional family includes father-in-law Alfonse DeAngelis, brother-in- law Stephen DeAngelis (Joanne) and a host of nieces and nephews.
Education was a cornerstone of Keith's life. He graduated from Montauk High School in the Class of 1975 and later attended Suffolk County Community College, where he completed his studies in 1977. His thirst for knowledge and self-improvement carried into his adult life, leading him to serve honorably in the U.S. Air Force, where he developed strong principles of discipline and respect.
Keith was known for his hardworking nature and the infectious wit that endeared him to friends and family alike. He had a unique ability to lighten the mood with his humorous sayings, often reminding those around him, "Don't hate me 'cause I'm beautiful," and "It is what it is." His charm and charisma left a lasting imprint on everyone he met.
In his free time, Keith was a man of many interests and hobbies. He earned a black belt in karate, showcasing his dedication and discipline in martial arts. He enjoyed woodworking and tackling home projects, always striving to create a beautiful environment for his family. Movies were a great source of entertainment for him, and he could often be found sharing laughter and stories with his loved ones, especially his grandchildren. A self-proclaimed Bigfoot enthusiast, Keith had a passion for the whimsical and mysterious, adding a sense of adventure to his life.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2025, from 2 pm-4 pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Pineville Chapel located at 10500 Park Road in Charlotte.
