Loretta Sayers Gould, 74, was carried gently into the loving arms of her Creator by angelic hosts on August 11, 2011, after a courageous battle against pancreatic cancer. Born May 8, 1937 in Ivanhoe, VA, Loretta spent most of her life in Charlotte, living for many years on Magnolia Ave., in the city's historic Dilworth community, and later moving north to the University City area. Mrs. Gould was preceded in death by her parents (Edgar R. and Laura Cox Sayers), brother (Edgar R. "Buddy" Sayers Jr.), sisters (Opal Sayers Roberts and Nancy Sayers Grubb,) and her late husband, Kenneth Paul Gould.
Often called "Jo" by friends and immediate family (a nickname given to her by her father in childhood because she could do anything a boy could do, only better), Loretta enjoyed talking with people everywhere she went. A creative and talented seamstress, she shared her sewing and interior decorating skills with friends and businesses alike.
As a retired homemaker, Loretta enjoyed baking from scratch. She would often get up early in the morning to enjoy a cup of coffee and make homemade banana bread for friends, neighbors and the many physicians who treated her. The family would like to express sincere appreciation to the accomplished medical professionals and caregivers who cared for Loretta, including Dr. Robin Lee Filippi of Charlotte, NC and Dr. Charles Vollmer and his team of physicians and staff from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, PA.
Loretta is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Lloyd Turner Little and husband, Fred Little of Charlotte; son, Stanley Paul Gould and wife, Deborah Ann Long Gould, also of Charlotte, now residing in Jackson, NJ; sister, Venda (Lucky) Farmer and husband, Gerald Farmer, of Myrtle Beach, SC.
Affectionately known as "Nanny" or "Nana," by her grandchildren and their families, Loretta will be remembered by Shannon Lee Turner Weddington and late husband Donny Weddington of Rockwell, NC; Kelly Dawn Turner Rojas Lomax and Todd Lomax of Kannapolis, NC; Kendall Dwayne Turner, Sergeant, U.S. Army and wife, Mandi Turner of Kannapolis, NC; Taylor Daniel Gould and Hunter Jamison Gould of Jackson, NJ; and eight great grandchildren, Christopher & Dakota Weddington; Orlando, Jasper, LeAnna & Jason Rojas; and Elle & Kensley Turner.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at the Derita Chapel of McEwen Funeral Service, 6300 Mallard Creek Road. The family will receive friends following the memorial service.
