

Mrs. Mae Elizabeth Suddreth Van Camp, 101, of Charlotte, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, February 25, 2017 at a local senior care facility in Charlotte. Mrs. Van Camp, a lifelong resident of the greater NoDa community of this city, was born in Charlotte on May 12, 1915, oldest daughter of the late William Albert and Lula Mae Moore Suddreth.
Mae attended Charlotte Technical High School through the eighth grade in 1929. That year, she took her first job at Larkwood Hosiery Mill of Charlotte, and by the end of her first summer there, she was promoted as a supervisor for fifteen women. She would continue working in mills, finishing her career as a supervisor for fifteen years at Huntley Knitting Mills, in York, SC from which she retired in 1975.
Mrs. Van Camp was a devoted Pentecostal Christian and had been one since her conversion experience in the Garr Tent Revival in 1930 in Charlotte. She was a charter member of both Garr Memorial Church in 1930 and the former Christian Life Center in 1985. She was an active member while at both churches and for over twenty years at Garr she taught first-grade boys’ Sunday School. Mae loved God with all of her heart, and daily prayer was an important part of her life. Mae enjoyed cooking, scrapbooking, genealogy, crocheting and maintaining her house and yard. She loved her family dearly, and she always relished time spent with them.
In addition to her parents, Mae was preceded in death by her loving husband of nearly 47 years, Edwin E. Van Camp, in 1984. She was also preceded in death by three grandchildren, Bruce Nutter, Mary Elizabeth Van Camp and Angelia Nutter; by two sisters, Mattie G. Suddreth and Willie S. House; by two brothers, W. Clarence Suddreth and Alfred G. Suddreth; and by a son-in-law, Albin B. Nutter.
Mrs. Van Camp is survived by her daughter, Barbara Nutter of Buford, GA; her son, Ray Van Camp of Orlando, FL; six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; one sister, Esther Stewart of Charlotte; and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service in celebration of Mae’s life will be held on Saturday, March 4 at McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel, 5716 Monroe Road, Charlotte with Rev. Paul Garner officiating. Visitation will be held at 11am with the service following at 12 noon. Interment will follow the service in Sharon Memorial Park.
