

Mary Bridges Alexander of Charlotte, NC, died May 15, 2014 at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center in Charlotte. She was born February 3, 1919, in Blacksburg, SC, daughter of Luther B. Bridges and Alice Martin Bridges.
Mrs. Alexander graduated from Winthrop College and taught school in Chesterfield, SC, and at Epworth Orphanage in Columbia, SC. After marriage she also taught in Charlotte before becoming a full time mother and homemaker. Mary was a charter member of Hickory Grove Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, where she was active for over fifty years as a Sunday school teacher, elder and member of the Women of the Church who recognized her with a Life Membership award. She was also a long time member of the Hickory Grove Home Demonstration Club.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Alexander was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, N. S. Alexander; two brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her son, Jay Alexander and his wife Kathy, of Charlotte; daughter, Alice Skinner, of Charlotte; granddaughters, Stephanie Williams (Jon), Laura Skinner, and Emily Alexander, all of Charlotte; as well as two great-grandchildren, Hannah Catherine Williams and Ethan Alexander Williams. Mrs. Alexander is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews that she cherished as part of her extended family.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 18 from 6:00 p.m.–8:00 p.m. at Harry and Bryant Funeral Home, 500 Providence Road, Charlotte. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Matthews Presbyterian Church, 207 W. John St., Matthews, NC with the Rev. Bill Pederson officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, 700 West 6th Street in downtown Charlotte.
