

Mary Schaffer Myers, 105, of Charlotte, died on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2014, at Sardis Oaks Skilled Nursing Facility in Charlotte. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she was born September 6, 1908. She was the daughter of the late Anton Schaffer and Katherine Beck Schaffer of Austria, Hungary, who immigrated to this country through Ellis Island, NY. Mrs. Myers helped open the box office of the first Charlotte Coliseum in 1955, working for Mr. Paul Buck. She had previously worked with Mr. Buck in St. Louis, MO, at the Cardinals Ball Park. She continued to work for many years at the Charlotte Coliseum and Ovens Auditorium, and later at the Coliseum on Tyvola for Steve Camp. She was a member of Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Charlotte for many years. Mary was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Mrs. Myers is preceded in death by her husband, Bill Schenk, of St. Louis, MO, her second husband, Grier B. Myers of Indian Trail, NC, her nieces, Marlene Spitzmiller, and Joanie Evans of St. Louis, MO. She is survived by two sons, William D. Schenk of St. Louis, MO, and Mark Myers of Nichols, SC; grandchildren, Kathy, Donnie, David, Jimmy, and Chris, and eight great-grandchildren of St. Louis, and grandson, Jason, and wife, Shelby, of Kings Mtn., NC, and their children, Melia and Banks, and grandson, Matthew, of Charlotte, NC. She is also survived by nieces, Barbara Stojeba, Ginger Thomas, three nephews, David, Richard, and Gil Myers of Monroe, and nieces Kathy and Angela (VanEvery) and nephews Steve and Salem VanEvery and nephew Eric Alexander of San Clemente, CA. Daughters-in-law, Betty Schenk of St. Louis, MO, Janis Mauney Myers Wright of Shelby, NC, and Teresa Irene Elvington Myers of Nichols, SC. She loved life, and she brought much joy, laughter, and love to everyone around her. " I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an afterglow of smiles when life is done. I'd like to leave an echo whispering softly down the way, of happy times and laughing times, and bright and sunny days. I'd like the tears of those who grieve, to dry before the sun, of happy memories that I leave when life is done." (Author Unknown). A private funeral service for family and close friends will be held to celebrate the life of Mrs. Myers at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 6 at the Mausoleum Chapel of Sharon Memorial Park. Arrangements will be made by McEwen Funeral Service at Sharon Memorial Park.
