Max, 63, passed away Monday, September 6, 2021 at his home in Charlotte. He moved to Charlotte in 2019 to be closer to his beloved daughter and grandchild. Born November 28,1957 in Lima, Peru he was a son of Hartmut and Elizabeth Sommerfeld. Following graduation from Republica de Colombia in Chemical Engineering, Max furthered his education at the University of Chapel Hill where he earned a Masters in Business Administration (MBA).
His family fondly remembers how he encouraged his children to explore the world, passing many of his own interests to his daughter and son, Johanna and Niels Sommerfeld. Max’s lifelong purpose was to provide the best life he could for his children, never afraid to adapt when work called for relocations, endlessly determined, hard working, and always up for a challenge.
Anyone who knew Max knew the joy of his life was his grandson, Nico Collings. He adored his sister Doritt, his mother Elizabeth, and his nephew Joaquin who were very important in his life.
An avid tennis player, Max recently joined a tennis club to continue to practice his lifelong hobby. Max was also a lover of surfing, reading, salsa dancing, and traveling.
He is survived by his former wife, Margarita Ufen; two children, Johanna Collings and Niels Sommerfeld; three beloved grandchildren, Nico, Luca, and Eli Collings; and his sister, nephew, and mother, Doritt Sommerfeld, Joaquin Acuña Sommerfeld, and Elizabeth Sommerfeld.
