Son of the late Sonia and Isaac Luski, he is survived by his wife Lori Collins Luski; daughters Lauren Luski and Emily Terényi (Thomas Terényi); his former wife and mother of his two daughters, Ellen Carruth Luski; his grandchildren Theodor, Tobias, and Charles Terényi and Charlotte Luski; his sisters Frances Luski and Ellie Valenstein (Robert Valenstein); and a large extended family.
Born on May 23, 1953, in Havana, Cuba, Moses fled the communist regime with his family in 1960, settling in Charlotte, where they became an integral part of the community.
Moses was a life-long learner and intellectual. He graduated with a BA from Columbia University and a JD from UNC School of Law. After serving as a law clerk for Justice J. Frank Huskins of the NC Supreme Court for two years, he practiced law as a partner, first at Ruff, Bond, Cobb, Wade & McNair, followed by Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick for the last 28 years.
A proud Jew, Moses contributed to the Jewish community, serving as the President of the Hebrew Cemetery Association for the last two years. He also served as President of Jewish Family Services.
Moses’ greatest passion was for the arts, with a unique appreciation for the way art could cause one to think, reflect, and feel. He found joy in sharing his personal collection with the community and in 2015 he established the Moses Luski Contemporary Collection at UNC Charlotte Center City. Moses also donated and loaned works to numerous museums and institutions, such as the Mint Museum of Art, the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, the Walker Center in Minneapolis, and the Foundation for the Carolinas.
Moses was a loving and supportive father and over the last nine years he enjoyed perhaps his most exciting role to date; grandfather. Moses knew how to bring a smile to his grandchildren’s faces and formed a strong and memorable bond with each one.
He will be remembered by his loved ones for his love of classical music, his soulful poetry, and his ability to appreciate the beauty of life in its every detail.
Moses was immensely grateful for the care of his medical team including Dr. Jordan Lipton of Signature Health, Dr. Thomas G. Knight and the entire Hematology and Oncology team at Atrium Health, Dr. Gerald Hladik of UNC Health, and Dr. Eric Padron of the Moffitt Cancer Center. The support of his caregivers Kelly Fisher, Brenda Sheppard, Linda White, and Lisa Norwood was a great comfort to Moses and his family.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 12 o’clock at the Hebrew Cemetery Chapel (1801 Statesville Avenue) with Rabbi Michael Wolk officiating. Interment will follow at the Hebrew Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Hebrew Cemetery of Greater Charlotte ([email protected]) or to the Carolinas Lymphoma and CLL Fund at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute c/o Altium Health Foundation, 7800 Providence Road, Suite 208, Charlotte NC 28226 or via their website at www.atriumhealthfoundation.org.
