Murphy was born May 2, 1928 in Cherryville, NC and grew up in Indian Land, SC before moving to Charlotte, NC to work and raise a family.
Murphy was loved by everyone who met him, he “never met a stranger” and if you were his friend, you were “a part of his family”. He was a World War II Veteran having served in the U S Navy. Although Murphy never talked very much about his life during the War, he did talk about being in the Navy and remained extremely patriotic and proud of his country his entire life. Murphy was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed the outdoors. Upon his retirement from A. G. Boone Trucking Company in 1982, he moved from Charlotte, NC to Sharon SC. He was kidded from time to time about how far in the “country” he lived but that was where Murphy found his true happiness, communing with nature. He always had dogs and many times after relocating, birds and even chickens which he enjoyed taking care of. Murphy was a true caregiver, he loved his children and was one of the proudest grandfather’s you would ever want to meet. Murphy was one of those people that would literally give you the shirt off his back if he knew you needed it. Murphy was a member of Olivet Presbyterian Church in McConnells, SC.
