She was a lifelong resident of Charlotte, raising her family in the Steele Creek community, later moving to Sharon Towers. Born the fourth child to Luke and Floy Query in 1921, Nancy was the sister of Laura McLaughlin, Luke Query and William Query who predeceased her and is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Wells. After attending Berryhill High School, Nancy graduated from Queens College in Charlotte in 1942 with a degree in Education. In 1944, she moved to Washington, D.C. to work with the Munitions Department. She later moved back to her hometown to marry her high school sweetheart, John Erskine Byrum Jr. They shared a love of gardening, dancing, traveling and family for fifty-nine years. After the birth of their fourth child, Nancy attended Western Carolina and Appalachian State University earning a degree in Special Education and began a twenty year career with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools as a Special Education Teacher.
Nancy is survived by her loving daughters and sons-in-law: Joan and Bill McCormick of Hillsborough N.C., Betty and Bill Harraman, Jean and Bill Cathey, and Ann Byrum, all of Charlotte; her dear eight grandchildren: Emily and Matthew Lagas-Rivera, Jonathan and Alisa McCormick, Ashley and Jason Burgin, Graham and Jana Cathey, Laura and Franz Swartz, Cathy and Michael Farnham, John and Erica Harraman, Sarah and Michael Dockery, and her adored 14 great grandchildren.
Her family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Sharon Towers, Dr. Donald Russ, Dr. John Cedarholm, Hospice & Pallative Care (Charlotte Region), and Seniors Helping Seniors who gave Nancy compassionate care.
A celebration of Nancy’s life will be held Monday, May 6, at Steele Creek Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at 10:15 a.m. at the church cemetery, followed by a memorial service in the sanctuary at 11:00. The family will receive friends following the service.
