Born in Gastonia, NC to Ralph and Irene Carswell Hamilton, Dean attended Queens College and Central Piedmont in Charlotte, NC. Dean served in The U.S. Navy from 1956 - 1960 during which time he was stationed in Puerto Rico, working in the Admiral’s office.
He spent his entire working career with Duff-Norton Company encompassing multiple roles throughout the years including Marketing and Sales Manager, and Director of National Accounts and Distribution.
Dean met Annette Smith and it was love at first sight! The proudest moments in his life were when their children were born; Wyatt Dean Hamilton (Sylvia), and Whitney Hamilton Ruth (Rodney), four grandchildren, Rodney Christian Ruth, III, Anniston Campbell Ruth, Wyatt Dean Hamilton, Jr. and Sienna Raine Hamilton. He is also survived by a sister, Sandy West.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his step-father Norman Oates, his siblings Larry Hamilton, Judith Martin, and Kenny Mills.
Dean served as a head coach at Steele Creek Athletic Association for multiple softball and baseball teams throughout the years, and was a charter member of Good Shepherd Church in Charlotte, NC. Dean believed that one should face each day at your BEST! From the way you dress, preparation, the way you care about people and speak to them - give 100%. Having overcome difficult circumstances early in life, he became a strong provider for his own family and was a firm believer in helping others any way he could. Dean was able to retire in his 50s in order to dedicate more time to his family. He enjoyed vacationing at the beach, keeping an immaculate yard, playing golf, and spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. He also really enjoyed going out to eat - specifically at his favorite breakfast place Kopper Kettle, R.O.’s Bar-B-Cue and Tony’s Ice Cream. Dean valued the truth so much that if you asked for his opinion, he would have found it disrespectful not to be 100% honest… even if the answer was tough to hear. Dean was a champion of the underdog and fiercely loyal to his family and friends. If Dean Hamilton was on your side, it meant a lot!
A memorial service to celebrate Dean’s life will be held at Good Shepherd Church, 13110 Moss Rd., Charlotte, NC 28273 on Friday, December 19, 2025 at 11:00 am.
