

Phyllis Thompson Hale (MeMe), 89, peacefully passed into the hands of God at home on Saturday, February 27, 2016. She was born July 25, 1926 in Durham, NC to the late Catherine Carrington Winfree and Arnold Thompson. She had one sister, Edith Thompson Byrd, deceased.
Phyllis graduated from Durham High School in 1944 and married the love of her life, Earl L. Hale in 1945. Nine years later, he moved on and left her to raise their 2 children alone. She raised her children with incredible strength and dignity as a single Mother and guided them with a strong faith in God, humility and accountability. In 1981, she retired after 25 years at Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC in Durham, and moved to Charlotte to be closer to family. A devoted Mother and Grandmother, Phyllis also loved to cook, bake, and enjoyed putting together 1000 piece puzzles. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church. In the last 3 years of her life and until her passing, she lived with and was cared for by her loving and faithful daughter and son-in-law.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Dr. Michael L. Hale and wife Jane, of Hope Mills, NC. Grandchildren and great grandchildren, Lisa and Mike Packer (Amanda and Megan) and John Hale (Karis and Kai).
Also her daughter, Marsha Hale Smith and husband Ray of Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren Shannon Smith, Rachel Graves, Bob and Terry Smith, and Rhonda Simmons. Six great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren.
A special thank you to Hospice and Palliative Care and to her Hospice family – Sarah, Sandra, Susan and Nicole for the loving care they gave her.
A graveside service will be held at 10:00am on March 3, 2016 at Sharon Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 11:30am at Calvary United Methodist Church, with a visitation beginning at 11:00.
