Born April 24, 1943, in Jonesville, NC, she was the daughter of the late Homer Hill and Hazel Robinson Hill. The family relocated to Newton, NC where she surrounded herself with many lifelong friends. Her long career consisted of various positions at a handful of companies that all had one thing in common: they had hired a dynamite employee. She was a tireless, devoted and loyal employee. No matter what the position she was originally hired for, she consistently worked her way up to being indispensable. She not only took pride in her successes but also in elevating those around her.
One of greatest accomplishments was the home she created for her family. The family home of 51 years in Charlotte brought her immense joy. It was a sanctuary that she kept stylishly designed, immaculately clean and always welcoming to others.
The joy of Phyllis’s life was her family. She married her devoted husband, Paul Graham Strickland Sr. on June 23, 1967. She was also a doting mother and grandmother who always led by example and provided love and support in all their endeavors. The memories she created with her grandsons will forever be cherished.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Strickland Sr.; two children, Paige Vassar (Greg) of Wilmington, NC, and Paul Strickland Jr. (Susan) of Charlotte, NC; and three beloved grandchildren, Gray Strickland, Carter Strickland and Finley Vassar; as well as her sister, Judy Smith of Granite Falls, NC.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by a brother, Jimmy Hill of Newton, NC.
A service dedicated to Phyllis’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 16th, 2024 in the chapel of McEwen Funeral Service – Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28210.
