
Richard Everett Mortenson, born January 17, 1943, to Everett Norbell Mortenson and Helen Higgins Mortenson, in Chicago, IL. He passed away peacefully on December 6, 2016 at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte, NC.
Richard finished as Salutatorian in his graduating class at Fenger High School in Chicago before earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. He met his loving wife, Sherrill Henderson, in Baltimore. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with friends and family.
Richard served at Mecklenburg County Social Services for over 20 years and retired in 2001. Richard had a passion for the arts including classical music, opera, theology, and literature. He served the church throughout his adult life in various capacities. In the 1980s, he was a volunteer host at WFAE-FM. As a loving and caring father, he guided his sons to appreciate the beauty of the arts and a joy of learning with an inquisitive mind.
Richard is survived by his family that includes his wife, Sherrill, his sons, Eric and Sean, Sean's wife, Christie, and three grandchildren, Kate, Andrew, and Max.
Richard was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church for many years, and later at Calvary Church, and most recently at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church.
A memorial service will be held at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, 8515 Rea Road, Waxhaw, NC 28173, at 2:30pm on Tuesday, December 13, 2016.
