Robert J. “RJ” Smith was born in Huntington, West Virginia, and spent 33 years in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, D.C., where he built a career in the federal government with the Department of Treasury, National Institutes of Health, and Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
RJ married Mary Beth 52 years ago. Together they raised two children, Jerrin Elizabeth and Eric Jonathan (Katie), and he was the proud grandfather of Kyle, Conor, and Molly.
A graduate of Marshall University, RJ went on to serve as a graduate assistant, teaching mid-level accounting at both Marshall and Ohio University before beginning his federal service.
RJ was a warm and friendly man who gave generously of his time. He volunteered through his Presbyterian churches and the Kiwanis, and had served as Vice President of his college fraternity. He was also a proud U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He was a past member of the American Legion.
In retirement, RJ and Mary Beth traveled the world together, visiting 40 countries. He especially loved taking his grandchildren to Disney World and on other adventures. Before retirement, RJ enjoyed gardening, and in 2004 discovered a passion for woodworking. Many friends and family members treasure the bowls, vases, and wooden flowers he crafted. RJ participated in the Crafts Fair at Brunswick Plantation for 17 years. He also enjoyed playing golf in the Bogey League at Brunswick Plantation and played pickleball with his daughter.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held Saturday, December 6, 2025 at 1 p.m., at McEwen Pineville Chapel, 10500 Park Rd, Charlotte, N.C. with reception to follow.
