Al was born on 9/26/1942. After a fulfilling life Al passed away peacefully on 1/30/2026 to join his family in heaven. He is survived by wife, Peggy L. Padgett, Brother and Sister-in-law Eugene and Diana Larrimore, his unofficially adopted children and very best friends, Paul and Terrie Riefenberg. His nephews, Alan Larrimore and Brent Fowler; his Sisters-in-law, Corrine Simpson and Elwood Rabon. He is preceded in death by his father, Roy Allen Padgett, Sr., mother, Callie Belle Lee Padgett, sister Donna Lee Padgett Robinson, and little brother, Danny Brack Padgett.
Al graduated from Duke University in 1964 with a BA from the College of Arts and Sciences. After which, he taught in the Mecklenburg County School System for 3 years. He was intrigued with computers and the emerging data processing industry. So, he became a Programmer Analyst, Systems Analyst, and MIS Director for a Holding company in Chalotte. He was president of an IBM Systems Users Group in 1977.
In 1981, this background led Al to co-found a computer consulting firm, Consultants in Data Processing, Inc. (CDP, Inc.) with his wife, Peggy. While under his leadership the company earned national awards for both Sales and Customer Satisfaction in its industry. He was most proud of the Customer Satisfaction Awards where he stated, “without Customer Satisfaction, there can be no Sales or Growth, Customer Satisfaction is everything”. After being purchased by the Riefenbergs in 1997, CDP, is still thriving and providing the same level of excellence in sales and service today.
After the sale of CDP, Al’s love of Sailing took him to the coast where he enjoyed sailing the Neuse River and Pamlico Sound with his various sailboats, the Soaring Free, the Tranquility. and the Morning Star. While he loved fishing and crabbing from his dock, there was nothing for him like messing about on his sailboat. He just loved the tranquility of it all. He loved taking his black lab, Star, out for a late afternoon cruise on the creek in the canoe. They were one as he paddled along.
Al was an active member of the New Bern Area Power Squadron and Cape Lookout Coast Guard Auxiliary. He volunteered and read for the “Reading for the Blind” program on National Public Radio (NPR) in New Bern. While with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, he volunteered as Radio Watch Stander at Coast Guard Station – Swansboro.
Being a workaholic, Al could not play all the time, so he got involved in Real Estate in the New Bern and surrounding area. Throughout the years, he served on the various committees of the NRRAR association and served on the NRRAR Board of Directors. In 2013, he was awarded Realtor of the Year for his dedication and professionalism to his clients and fellow associates of the real estate community. He always served his clients and fellow associates with the utmost of integrity and dedication.
Always planning ahead to the next phase of life, in 2020, Al decided it was time to move back home to Charlotte, and he and Peggy settled in at The Sharon at Southpark.
However, that is not the end of the story. There was something missing. So, in 2023, he decided that he and Peggy needed a fur baby to enhance their lives. So, in August, a 3 lb. bundle of joy, little Bella, came home with them where she has and continues to fill each day with happiness and love.
