Born in Lincoln County, NC on December 30, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Frank Luther Beam and Sally Baxter Beam. She graduated from Cherryville High School and attended Appalachian State Teachers College before moving to Charlotte about 80 years ago. She was employed at Hudson Hosiery where she met Joseph Maxwell Phillips, Jr., who became her loving and devoted husband of 52 years. Joe preceded her in death in 2001. When World War II began, Hudson Hosiery became the Shell Loading Plant where she continued to work supporting the war effort.
Mrs. Phillips was a member of a loving and caring family of faith, Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church since 1949. In addition to her parents, others preceding her in death include sisters, Viola Eaker (Cecil), Madeline Roach (Arthur), Mazelle McNeely (Tommy), Gonza LaHood (George) and Josephine Beam; brothers, Chranson, Dwight( Virginia), Bryan (Juanita), Kent (Marie) and F.L. (Edith Ellen); and son-in-law Edward Black, Jr.
Survivors include her children, Rebecca P. Black, Carolyn P. Bolin (Galen) and Sandra P. Low (Cameron); a sister, Nancy Beam; two grandchildren, Christine B. Thomas (Joe) and Scott Low; a great granddaughter, Sienna Thomas and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Pritchard Memorial Baptist, 1117 South Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203, with Rev. Bobby Morrow Jr. and Rev. Stan Heiser officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.
Her family would like to thank all her caregivers at Peak Resources in Charlotte for the wonderful care they gave her in the last five years.
Graveside service and burial will take place at 3:00 pm in Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, 112 Mt. Zion Church Rd., Cherryville, NC 28021.
The family has requested that memorials in memory of Susan Beam Phillips be made to Pritchard Memorial Baptist Church.
