

He graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory School in San Francisco in 1943. Mr. O'Neill entered the U.S. Army, Company G, 242nd Infantry Regiment, 42nd Rainbow Division. He served as a machine gun sergeant in France and Germany in World War II and was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart and French Legion of Honor.
Following his military service, he was trained at American University, Washington, D.C. for employment as a National Service Officer with the Disabled American Veterans. Mr. O'Neill served in that capacity for five years, and then began a 50-year career in the contract door and hardware industry. He was a past president of the American Society of Architectural Hardware Consultants and president of Delph Hardware in Charlotte, N.C.
Mr. O'Neill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Kathleen; daughter, Theresa Bergmark of Goldsboro; son, Brian (Deanna) O'Neill of Charlotte; and grandsons, Joseph (Hillary) Bergmark of Apex, David (Jennifer) Bergmark of Raleigh; and granddaughter, Megan O'Neill of Charlotte. He was predeceased by his brothers, Eugene, William and John.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am Thursday, August 21 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 3016 Providence Rd., Charlotte. The committal will follow in the church columbarium. Friends will then be received in the fellowship hall.
Memorial contributions may be made to Catholic Charities, c/o St. Gabriel Catholic Church or to Harris Hospice at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.
