Sunset - September 30, 2022
On the morning of September 30, 2022, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Varah Hart-Clark, peacefully entered into eternal life in her home as she ascended to be with the Lord at the age of 83. Varah Marie was born to the late James “Jimmy” Wallace and Annie H. Wallace in Everetts, NC on March 19, 1939. Varah was reared in a Christian home encouraged by her parents to love and take care of family. She was an active member of her family church, Lily of the Valley (Everetts, NC) and she later joined Ebenezer Baptist Church (Charlotte, NC).
She was educated through the Martin County School system and graduated from Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), which sparked her career in education and soon became a staple in her community. Varah retired from the Nash-Rocky Mount School System after 40+ years of teaching 4th graders in Math and Science at Baskerville Elementary (Rocky Mount, NC). Through her tenure she formed and nurtured many relationships with her fellow colleagues. Driven by her love of teaching, she also taught in the Mecklenburg County School System in Charlotte, NC totaling 48 years of service as an Educator.
In 1963, Varah married Leonard B. Hart, who preceded her in death. From their union was born one daughter, Linda Patrice, who they loved and cherished dearly. In 1991, she married Thomas D. Clark who was at her side until her passing.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband Thomas Clark, her daughter, Linda Collins (Cedric); her two grandchildren, Cedara Collins and Cohen Collins, Charlotte, NC; her two brothers, Bennie Wallace, Everetts, NC, Elton Wallace (Louise), Hassel, NC; and her sister, Gloria Wallace, Everetts, NC; She was also cherished by a whole heap of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The youngest of 12 children, she was preceded in death by her parents James “Jimmy” Wallace and Annie H. Wallace; brothers: W.C. Howell, James Wallace, Jr., Jeremiah Wallace, Murray Wallace, William Wallace, Earl Wallace; sisters: Gertie Wallace, and Julia Congleton.
Varah was lover of life, and it was expressed passionately through family, education, music, and plants. In 2006, she left the life she built in Rocky Mount, NC to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren in Charlotte, NC. You were guaranteed to laugh at least once when having a conversation with her especially if she reminisced about family stories. Varah loved and introduced many of her family and friends to the finer things – as she had a passion for fashion and an eye for quality furniture. She could grow anything with just a snap of a seedling - one of the best green thumbs around.
You could hear music lightly playing throughout her house, as she was known for keeping a radio on in almost every room. She and her husband Thomas loved music and were a sight to see on the dance floor. With her you were bound to have a good time. She showered those she held dear with love, food, plants, clothes and compliments. She was the person you could always go to for a “pick me up” when life got rough. Not one to put on airs, she would listen, relate, console, and provide sound advice. Varah Hart-Clark was her family’s #1 cheerleader and for this she will always be remembered.
In lieu of flowers please donate to the St. Jude Charity Children’s Research Hospital in her name, Varah Hart-Clark. www.StJude.org
