William George Reynolds

Mr. Reynolds passed away December 9, 2015 in Charlotte after a short illness. Born August 2, 1925 in Freeport, Long Island, NY, he was a son of the late Oliver Edward Ulysses Reynolds and Edith Post Reynolds, and was a graduate of Freeport High School.

Bill proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy in WWII. After the war he graduated from Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, NY. During college, he met Margaret (Peg) Bannerman Cornwell and they married in 1948 in Long Island, NY. Bill and Peg subsequently settled in Wilmington, DE where they devoted their lives to raising their three children, Sandy, Dick, and Pete. Bill was a Boy Scout leader for many years and active in organizing activities for the youth at Calvary Episcopal Church in Wilmington.

Bill enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, and gardening throughout his lifetime. He worked for the DuPont Company in textile marketing services for 32 years. In 1976, Bill and Peg moved to Charlotte and became active members of St Martin’s Episcopal Church. Bill established a memorial rose garden at the church and continued to maintain it for many years. In 2004, Bill married Babs Daniel and for the past six years they have resided in the Aldersgate Retirement Community.

Bill was preceded in death by Peg Reynolds, his loving wife of 54 years; his sister, Ruth R. Huestis; and his older brother, Oliver E. Reynolds.

Bill is survived by his wife, Barbara “Babs” Joy Reynolds; daughter, Sandy McCarty (Bruce) of Charlotte; sons, Richard Reynolds of Charlotte and Pete Reynolds (Debbie) of Matthews; and Babs’ daughters, Janna Jenkins (David) of Charlotte and Renee Battle (Tom) of Boone.

Bill is also survived by a sister-in-law, Jane Nettleton of Midlothian, VA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A service to celebrate Bill’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 13th at St. Martin’s Episcopal Church. His family will receive friends at the church following the service.
