IN THE CARE OF
Teague Funeral Service
Betty Jo (Armstrong) Altheide (73) departed this life on Friday, September 18 surrounded by loved ones in Crozet, Virginia, following complications from Alzheimer’s disease.
Betty, an eighth generation Hoosier and long-time resident of Princeton and later Newburgh, was deeply proud of being the proverbial farmer’s daughter, and of her rural roots. She loved good food of all kinds, books, traveling, classical music, her church, National Public Radio, being with her family, and long walks with her dogs in every chapter of her life. She has passed all of these passions on to the next generation.
But nothing delighted her more than her kids, grandkids, and a good laugh.
In addition to all of the above, Betty was a Language Arts teacher at Princeton Community High School, an organist, a life-long alto, a gardener, baker, an excellent cook, and an all-around loving and loyal parent.
She is predeceased by her parents, Joe Arch and Meredith Armstrong, and husband, Taylor B. Altheide, Jr., and many beloved aunts and uncles.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Erika Nemergut of Charlottesville, Virginia; Greta Walters of Santa Barbara, California, the Rev. Joshua Walters, of McLean, Virginia, and their spouses; her grandchildren: Spencer, Maggie, Kate, and Josh Nemergut; Finn McClintock; and James and Eleanor Walters; her sister Kathy J. Hobbs, of Somerset, New Jersey; nephew Matthew Shutske of Seattle, Washington, and niece Angela Harrison of Fairfax, Virginia. Following Betty’s marriage to Taylor in 1995, she was welcomed into the Altheide family and blessed to be step-mother to Bryan, Jeff, and Eric Altheide, and grandmother to Christina, Ashley, Ivy, Owen and Grace.
Due to the pandemic, a memorial service will be postponed until the summer of 2021 at St. Paul’s Epicopal Church in Evansville, Indiana; interment will follow at that time. Memorial contributions in her honor can be sent to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 301 SE 1st St, Evansville, IN 47713 or to the charity of your choosing.
