

D. Lewis “Cap” Mattie of Charlottesville, Virginia, passed away on Wednesday, October 1, 2014 surrounded by his loved ones. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ellin Kelly Mattie; his son Bob Mattie and his wife Terri Mattie, his son Ron Mattie, his daughter Edie H. Robinson, his grandchildren Jeff Mattie, Kelly Mattie, TJ Robinson, Ryan Mattie and Miranda Mattie, and his great-granddaughter Riley Robinson. He is preceded in death by his mother Edith Hill Mattie and his father Rear Admiral Dominic Lewis Mattie. He was born on April 1, 1936 in Boston, Massachusetts. As the son of a Naval officer his youth was spent in several locations including Coronado, CA, Pearl Harbor - Where he was a witness to the bombings as a child, and finally Annapolis, MD. He was a graduate of The Severn School in Severna Park, attended the University of Maryland and served in the Army in the 101st Airborne Division. After meeting and marrying his wife Ellin in New York City, he returned to the Annapolis area to raise his family and start his printing company, Mattie Graphics, which he then brought to Charlottesville, VA in 1978. He immersed himself in the community, becoming a member of several non-profits including, but not limited to, the PVCC Education Foundation, the Charlottesville Police Department Foundation and founded the Lexington Police Department Foundation. He will be remembered as a loving family man, and a selfless contributor to the continued improvement of the community around him. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, October 3, 2014 at the Teague Funeral Home. A service will be held in his honor this Saturday, October 4th at 10AM at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Charlottesville, VA.
