Gary "Turtle" Ivan Green

Gary "Turtle" Ivan Green, age 81, passed away on February 1, 2025, in Charlottesville, VA. Born on May 7, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY, Gary was the loving husband of 45 years to Lisa Mary Green. Gary was also the devoted father of: Lucas (Regina) Green and Jillian (Patrick) Loughran. He also adored his four grandchildren; Melanie, Izzy, Eli, and Rory, and loved his siblings; Danny (Beverly) Green, Bruce (Linda) Green, Steven (Bonnie) Green, and Sandy (Robert Gottlieb). Other survivors include his brother in law, Nicholas (Kathleen) Lang, twelve nieces, nephews, and many cousins.

Gary was a teacher and a basketball coach. He coached at Brooklyn College, then in the professional basketball league in Stockholm, Sweden where his team, Alvik, won the National Championship in 1981. Then after a stint scouting for the Houston Rockets, he reinvented himself and had a successful career as an industrial real estate broker.

When he wasn’t coaching Lucas and Jillian, he supported them as a spectator while they played an array of sports and traveled everywhere with them. Gary loved playing golf and talking about sports with other enthusiasts. He had many good friends, some from childhood, some from high school and college and beyond, including former basketball players, fellow teammates, and fellow coaches who stayed in touch with him.

He will be greatly missed. May his memory be a blessing.

Services for Gary will be private, there will be a Celebration of Life in the spring for Gary. Condolences may be left on the Teague Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers a memorial donation may be made to a charity of your choice.
