George LeRoy Wade was born on 12/30/1959 in Roanoke, Virginia to Samuel Wade and Janet Wade (nee Appley), both of whom preceded him in death. He died at home (caught a ride on the Peace Train
After graduating from Patrick Henry High School, he attended Virginia Tech for a brief time, but music was his passion and he and a few friends formed the band Not Shakespeare, which he fronted during his "rock and roll years." He was also a highly sought after sound engineer during this time. His second career, as a business process improvement specialist, which spanned more than 25 years at Crutchfield, lasted until 2023 when his illness forced him to retire. He was so many things and never let his illness define him: a master chef, singer, song writer, guitar player, philanthropist, teacher, volunteer, organizer, activist, advocate, ally, friend, brother, uncle, grandfather, pet Dad and husband.
During his retirement and when his health would allow, he enjoyed hiking, attending concerts, cooking, bartending, kayaking, traveling, reconnecting with friends, listening to podcasts and audiobooks, making music and adventuring.
George is survived by his wife, Jennifer "Jenn" Butt, 4 sisters: Irene Wade (Ivan), Virginia "Ginny" Wade (Cliff), Janet "Tina" Wade-Utay (Art), Kathryn Atkins (Chris), 6 nieces and nephews, "sibkids": Madelaine Wade (Jose), Bryan Atkins, Emily Dickinson Cothran (Evan), Hunter Atkins (Ashton), Samuel Dickinson, and Beckett Wade (Willard), Daughter Eliza Kahn (Chris) and their children Madeline and Alice, and beloved pets Carmella (the chocolate tornado), Jasmine, Janey and Chadwick.
George intended for an anatomical donation to be one of his lasting legacies, but the years of treatment and body damage from disease progression did not allow for this dream to be fulfilled. In his memory, if you are willing and able, please be sure to designate yourself as an anatomical and/or organ donor and please donate blood/platelets each time you are eligible. Go forth and live your life in the most George Wade-ian way: Love your neighbors, feed the hungry, volunteer to help those less fortunate than you, teach people the skills that you have, learn about the world, meet people, read, make music, and give your time to causes that you believe in.
Because George was not eligible to make the anatomical donation, he will be cremated and there will be a celebration of life sometime in the spring of 2026.
If you feel so inclined, and in lieu of gifts or flowers, please give of your time or money to causes close to his heart or to yours
