

Margaret Ellen Bayne Carter, aged 90, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 28, 2016 in Charlottesville, VA. She was born in Richmond, VA, the only child of Thomas W. Bayne and Helen Haynes Woodridge. Margaret Carter held a master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University and practiced at Children’s Hospital of Richmond. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-father, and husband. She is survived by her husband’s nephews, Christopher Carter of NYC, and Joseph Carter of Connecticut. In 1949, Margaret married Robert Nelson Page Carter and the couple moved to Europe while he served in the military until retiring as a colonel. They then moved to Charlottesville, where she worked at an architectural firm. Margaret was very active in the Presbyterian Church, serving in many capacities including President of the WOC, Presbyterian Women PC (USA). She was a member of the Synod of the Virginias and the Synod of the Mid-Atlantic. Nominated in the fall of 1988, Margaret was the first Moderator of the Presbytery of the James, Presbyterian Women and continued to serve as a member of the executive board until 1997, all the while maintaining her extensive service church wide to the women of the Presbyterian Church. Margaret was a faithful and energetic force in civic affairs. She served as Chairman of the Charlottesville City Planning Commission and in the Social Development Commission and the City Family Task Force. She was a founding member of the Charlottesville High School Neighborhood Association, Charlottesville Federation of Neighborhood Associations, and the Charlottesville Meals on Wheels Program. She served as Chairman of the Psychiatric Service Volunteers for the University of Virginia Hospital Auxiliary, Director of the Blood Program for the Charlottesville chapter of the Red Cross, and President of the Senior Center. She was also a member of the Virginia Citizens Planning Association. Margaret was a great lover of animals – her Scotties in particular – and gardening. Her koi pond was a beautiful oasis in the backyard of her Yorktown Drive home, where birds and squirrels were a constant form of entertainment. Her final years were spent working tirelessly as a board member and supporter of the Presbyterian Children’s Home of the Highlands in Wytheville, VA. Special thanks to her caregivers Gwendolyn Gray, Debbie Graves, Judy Willis, Thomasena Monroe, Portia Gray, and Constance Lee for their compassionate care during her final months.
