
Mary Frances Bailey Updike, formerly of Charlottesville, died at the age of 91 on October 30, 2015. Born on May 4, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William S. Bailey and Martha C. Bailey. She graduated from Greenville County High School. Frances then went on to graduate from the Riverside School of Nursing in Newport News as a Registered Nurse. She met and married Godfrey W. Updike, deceased, during World War II and they had two sons, G.W. Updike, Jr., deceased, and Malon S. Updike of Charlottesville. Her training as a nurse and her marriage during World War II formed the basis for her work and volunteering in the community. She worked at the Martha Jefferson Hospital, the Leeland Nursing Home, as Plant Nurse for Morton’s in Crozet and ended her career as an Emergency Room Nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital. Frances served on the board of the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad and volunteered at the free clinic. She was a Past Virginia State President for the Occupational Health Nurses. She was very committed to veteran’s activities and causes. Her most visible efforts were in support of the American Legion Auxiliary. She served in many positions locally, but also was a Past Department President for the State of Virginia. For over 30 years she took vacation time to serve on the staff of Virginia Girls State as a counselor and as nurse. Frances was active in and member of Broadus Memorial Baptist Church locally and the Clarksville Baptist Church in Clarksville, VA. She was preceded in death by her sister, Anna Mae Jernigan, her brother William J. Bailey and a grandson Jeffery K. Eagle. Frances is survived by her son Malon and his wife Barbara, daughter-in-law Deborah Updike of Orlando, FL, her brother Marshal T. Bailey and his wife Diane of Ashland, 14 Nieces and nephews, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. For the last 2 years she lived with and was cared for by a very special friend and her cousin Beverly Manter of Clarksville, VA. A graveside service at Monticello Memorial Gardens will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, November 3, 2015. The family will receive friends from 5:30 PM – 7:30 PM on Monday, November 2, 2015 at Teague Funeral Home on Ivy Rd. in Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle Rescue Squad.
