Michael Thomas Sutherland

Born June 10, 1983 passed away at home in Earlysville, VA at 41 years of age on March 11, 2025. He is survived by the two best parents, Bill and Sandra Sutherland of Earlysville, VA; his favorite sister and sometimes co-conspirator, Mary Sutherland of Butte, MT; and a myriad of loving extended family and incredible friends. He is preceded by his namesake, "Uncle Mike" Sutherland, and four grandparents who are welcoming him with open arms and boundless love.

In Mike's life, he was a lacrosse superstar, a soccer fanatic, a fearsome opponent on the rugby field, a reptile whisperer, and the greatest pastry chef the world has ever known. He loved fishing, sailing, exploring nature, and being chased by moose at every opportunity. He traveled to Costa Rica, Belize, St. Martin, and all over the United States chasing animals and pulling their tails.

Services will be held at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church; 550 Buck Mountain Road, on May 31st at 11:00 a.m. in Earlysville, Virginia with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider sharing your favorite Mike story (especially the mischievous ones), raspberrying the belly of your cat, or making a donation to the wildlife conservation organization Ducks Unlimited in his honor. His family would love for you to join in celebrating the life of a truly extraordinary son, brother, friend, fly fisherman, ailurophile, and outdoorsman.
