I had not seen Monty for many years when I ran into him at Barracks Road in Charlottesville about ten years ago. We went through elementary school and high school together.  He was probably the gentlest person I ever knew in school. We played together in the orchestra (he played bass viol), and he always had a wry comment, original with himself. He cared deeply about his family--that's what we discussed at Barracks Road, his hopes for his very intelligent children and their futures. I never saw or talked with him without feeling from him the kind caring of warmth for others.
