Richard “Dick” Hayden, 71, of Free Union, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, while surrounded by his loving, zany family. Dick is one of six children born to Italian Mama Catherine (Mario) and “Heinz 57” Donald Lynch Hayden in Burlington, Vermont in1944. For two years, Dick fought valiantly against an array of illnesses. Dick always maintained a brave face and never allowed others to fully understand the extent of his struggle. This action illustrates Dick’s selfless spirit and his wish to always be remembered as a fun loving-charmer and ever-present jokester. Dick cared deeply about his family, his community, and our brave military. He frequently could be found “doing the bump” at local dances, buying shoes for his loving wife, saving turtles on the side of the road, or serving as “Santa’s helper” for the Free Union Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony. “Saint Dick” is survived by his “fireball" wife of 34 years, Joanne (Morin) Hayden; three daughters, Stacey Hayden, Melissa Schap and husband Chris, and Jessica Hayden and fiancé Rick Davis; and his son, Rick Hayden and wife Carrie; grandchildren, Lyndi (Hayden) Crucitti, husband Tom, and their daughter Amelia, Alex Hayden, and Bradley Hayden; as well as his brothers, Rod Hayden and wife Betsy, Donald Hayden and wife Rosemary, Hal Hayden and wife Peg, Tom Hayden and wife Sondra; and sister, Josie Hayden and husband Mike. He will also be greatly missed by his German Shepherd, Zorro, and kitties, Black Cat and Snuggles. While his loss is sudden and deep to his many friends and family, his spirit remains strong and can never be forgotten; be it through his “Dickisms”, colorful language, or boisterous laughter. If you knew Dick or his wife Joanne, you would agree they are an outstandingly unforgettable pair. The Morin and Hayden families are forever bonded as one. We laughed and cried together. We thank the Morins for their ongoing love and support - Roger, Robert and wife Theresa, their sons Jeremey and Lucas and daughter Alexis, Diane and sons Michael, Eddie Jr and Fiancée Abby, our father angel grampa Remi and recently deceased angel “GMA” Mary Jane. We also very much appreciate the love and support of many friends and neighbors. Special thanks to Dr. Short and Dr. Campbell, and for the tireless efforts of the staff at UVA, Martha Jefferson, and Hospice of the Piedmont – Northridge. Kiss your loved ones tonight, face life with a sense of humor and faith in God, treasure your friends and have a frosty mug of beer for Saint Dick.
