

He was born in Springfield on June 1, 1931, the son of James Lyle Sr. and Dorothy (McKee) Montgomery. Jim married the love of his life, Nancy E. Burdinsky in Springfield on January 4, 1953. She preceded him in death, and they shared 68 happy years together.
Jim graduated from Springfield High School. He went on to join the National Guard and worked as an inspector at Fiat-Allis and later as a furniture repairman at Montgomery Ward. Jim proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His priorities were faith, family, and country. Jim was a helper and a fixer. He was often found doing woodworking, carpentry, or driveway mechanic work for family and friends, at church, or at home on the house he and Nancy built. There was always something to be added or done. Jim also enjoyed collecting model cars and tractors. He and Nancy were charter members of Chatham Christian Church, where they served faithfully.
He was also preceded in death by his parents; son, David Montgomery; brother, Tom Montgomery; and half-sister, Mary.
Jim is survived by his daughter, Cindy Hill of Chatham; grandchildren, Diana (Matthew) Lovell of Chandlerville and Cheryl (partner, Steve Dalkamp) Hill of Springfield; great-grandchildren, James, Jonah, Luke, Eliana, and Ana Lovell, Max and Caroline Schempp, and one expecting.
Visitation and Funeral Ceremony: 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, at Chatham Christian Church, 9897 S. Main St., Chatham, until the time of the Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. with Pastor Rick Wenneborg officiating. Reception immediately to follow.
Cremation was provided by Butler Cremation Tribute Center.
Graveside Ceremony: 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 13, 2026, at Camp Butler National Cemetery.
