A lifelong Chatham resident, he was born to Archer E. Nickerson and Dorothy Eldridge Nickerson of Chatham. He is predeceased by brother and sisters, Elwood Nickerson, Beverly Livesey, Bernice Marquit and Barbara Campbell.
Following his father’s fishing boat tragedy, Archie quit school to continue working at the Chatham Fish Pier as a fish packer to help support his family.
Archie was a fisherman heart and soul, 3rd generation, and fished commercially for numerous years on many boats. Later, he worked at the Chatham Yacht Basin Boatyard, and then went on to do maintenance at Chatham Elementary.
He was a passionate woodworker and skilled boat builder. He was a fiercely loyal friend and never hesitated to help someone out.
Archie proudly and honorably served in the Coast Guard. Some of his final words were, “Don’t abandon ship.”
Archie is survived by his son Glen Nickerson, Glen’s life partner, Leah Artman and daughter Cheryl Nickerson; nephews and nieces, Bruce Campbell, Steve, Ron and Rick Livesey, Donna Fairweather, Barb Burgess and Sandy Giroux; grandson Jamieson Cummings-Nickerson; and beloved dog Mayor.
