Charles Joseph Horan, known as “Charlie” or “Coach”, of Chatham, MA passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, December 9, 2025. He was 74. He was born in Worcester, MA to the late Peter C. and Rosalie T. Horan, on April 6, 1951. Charlie graduated from Doherty Memorial High School in 1969 and received a BS in Economics from UCONN in 1973 where he played baseball, which included going to the College World Series in 1972 as a second baseman. With a sly grin on his face, Charlie liked to remind his friends that he set – and held for many years – the record for most walks in a College World Series game.
Charlie loved his family, friends, and baseball. Whether it be playing or coaching, baseball was Charlie’s one true love throughout his entire life. While in college, Charlie played two summers with the Cape Cod Baseball League: one with Harwich (1971) and the other with Bourne (1972). After graduating, Charlie moved to the Cape. Charlie was President of Cape Cod Senior Babe Ruth from the mid 1980’s – 2002. During this time, Charlie came up with the idea of Team Cape Cod. Some of the teams Charlie coached included Harwich High School and Mass Maritime as the pitching coach from 1999-2003. In 1990 Charlie opened The Batter’s Box and continued to operate the batting cages until 1998.
In October 2006, Charlie and Shannon Metters got married. Charlie valued quality time with his family and was always looking for ways to help them. Whether it be watching a movie, coaching a sports team, cooking together, or watching a game, Charlie loved spending time with his wife Shannon and daughter Chloe. Charlie’s wit, ambition, and generosity will be missed by many.
In 2016, Charlie was inducted into the Worcester Public Schools Athletic Hall of Fame. Charlie enjoyed watching sports, and although he had his favorite teams, he always rooted for “a good game”. Charlie first organized the football pool at Seaside Alarms, where he worked, which he also holds the record for fewest losses. Charlie was also part of a football pool with his best friends Mark, Rich, Ross and Ollie.
Charlie is survived by his wife, Shannon Horan (Metters); his daughter, Chloe Horan; siblings Paul and Ann Marie Horan; his brother-in-law, Cory Metters and his wife, Rebecca; and nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brother, Peter Horan.
