Ed was the son of the late Michael and Isabella Ballance Hughes and was predeceased by his brother, John, and his sister, Mary Carlson.
Ed was born and raised in the Upper West Side of New York City and graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and St. John’s University with a degree in Economics and Accounting. He also proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, California.
Ed worked for Sinclair Oil Company in Manhattan where he met his wife Marilyn. When their headquarters relocated to the West Coast, Ed and Marilyn made the decision to stay in New York to be close to family. He then took a position at Nabisco Inc., and over the course of his career, held many senior management positions and later retired as a Managing Director in the Accounting Department.
After retiring, he moved to his favorite spot: Chatham, Massachusetts, where he had visited as a boy. He spent many summers with his family in Chatham and loved boating, cooking and was an avid reader. One of his favorite things to do was to drive every morning to see the sun rise at the Chatham Lighthouse.
Ed was a member of the New York Knights of Columbus, the Chatham Retired Men’s Club and the Joshua Jethro Investment Club. He also served on the Board of Governors of the Monomoy Yacht Club.
He volunteered at the Fire Museum in Brewster, the Railroad Museum in Chatham and with the Chatham A’s baseball team. He was also a frustrated golfer for many years. Ed always had a smile on his face and was a friend to all.
Ed will be lovingly remembered by Marilyn, his devoted wife, and his children, Pamela Hughes Yannoni, Edward Joseph, Jr., and Melissa Connell Altman. He is also survived by his adoring grandchildren, Amanda, Lindsey and Luke Yannoni, Julia and Samantha Altman, and Caroline Isabella and Cameron Hughes Connell.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-7:00 on November 22nd at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham. A Mass will be held at 10:30am, November 23rd, at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 57 Highland Avenue, Chatham. Interment will be held at a later date at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
