

Maureen’s greatest love was her family and she was the beloved wife of 50 years to Robert E. Starkweather Jr. She was devoted mother of Daniel Starkweather of Chatham, and Jonathan Starkweather and his wife Alyssa (Kendrick) of South Yarmouth. Maureen was the loving sister of Brian Spellman and his wife Connie of Stoneham. She was the adoring grandmother (known as “Mema”) of Emma and Abigail Starkweather of Harwich and step-grandmother of Beau Peterson and his wife Amy, and great-grandmother to Ellie of Traverse City, Mich. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and dear friends.
Maureen was born and raised in Quincy, and was the daughter of the late Mary (Little) Spellman and Richard Spellman. She attended grade school at St. Mary’s in West Quincy and then high school at Arch Bishop Williams in Braintree, graduating in 1958. After Graduation she went on to Mass General School of Nursing and became a registered nurse. Maureen then returned to Boston College and received her bachelor’s degree. Maureen was known by all being the town nurse Harwich for 24 years. She was compassionate, caring and loving nurse with all her patients and did many home visits when they needed care.
For Many years Maureen loved spending time with Bob, Jonathan, Daniel and many friends in their camper on North Beach in Chatham. She Enjoyed singing with the Chatham Chorale and she learned to play the flute. Maureen also enjoyed volunteering at the South Chatham Library.
Maureen’s family wishes to thank Dr. Scott Minor for his kindness, care and support. In addition, the family would like to say thank you to the staff at Cape Cod Hospital, Liberty Commons and Broad Reach Hospice for their exceptional and loving care during Maureen’s illness.
Memorial visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Jan. 9, 2016, at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Road, Chatham.
A memorial celebration of life will be held at her favorite picnic spot at a future date in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Lower Cape Outreach Council, P.O. Box 665 Orleans, MA 02653.
