

BREWSTER – May Christina Toon, Age 94, formerly of Boston, Chatham and Yarmouth Port died on March 5, 2013 after a short illness. She was born on May 21, 1918, the daughter of the late Eliza and William Toon. She was raised in West Roxbury and attended Boston Public Schools graduating from Hickox Secretarial School in 1936. After graduation she worked at the Reed Teachers Agency in Boston and in 1957 became the owner and director of the agency until 1976 when she retired.
She was pre-deceased by her sisters Hazel, Phyllis (LeMaitre) and her brother Staff Sgt. William D. Toon whose B17 went down in World War II, step sister Betsy E. Breed and brother-in-law Lucien H. LeMaitre. She is survived by her nephew William D. LeMaitre and his wife Anne of Brewster, nephew Charles H. LeMaitre and wife Lyn of Gloversville, NY, grand-nephew Charles H. LeMaitre, Jr. of Gloversville, NY, and grand-niece D’Arcy Share of Ringgold, GA and her five children Dilyn, Cassidy and triplets Ryan, Riley and Paige. She also leaves many beloved friends.
While living in Boston she was a member of the Congregational Church of West Roxbury and sang in the choir; a member of Boston Women’s City Club and past Chair of the Evening Group; a member and past Chair of the Boston Chapter of Zonta International and a member and past President of the National Association of Teachers Agencies.
After retiring she moved to Chatham, MA and was very active serving as Treasurer and past President of the Women’s Guild of the First Congregational Church of Chatham and served as a Trustee of the Church and as a member of the Pastoral Search Committee, she enjoyed being a member of the choir. She also volunteered with the Hospital Aid at Cape Cod Hospital working both in the Coffee Shop and the hospital itself. She was also a life member of the Chatham Historical Society and served on the Executive Committee for 15 years. In addition to the church choir she was a member of the Chatham Chorale.
Christina was an avid gardener, enjoyed attending the Cape Cod Symphony concerts and Cape Cod theater productions; playing bridge; playing the piano; reading and playing tennis. She also enjoyed skiing both in Europe and the US; travelling and visited many foreign location including the Mediterranean Islands, Egypt, Israel and Greek Isles, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Holland, France England, Scotland and Wales as well as many regions of the U.S. She also enjoyed cruises through the Panama Canal, The Mississippi River and The Enchanted Islands.
In 2000 she moved to Heatherwood in Yarmouth Port and became a member of First Congregational Church of Yarmouth. In 2008 moved to Epoch Assisted Living in Brewster. While at Epoch she participated in the book club, played bingo and black jack and knitted for the Baby Center. She greatly enjoyed watching her beloved Red Socks and listening to classical music.
Christina’s family thanks the staff at Epoch of Brewster Assisted Living for making such a lovely home for her. We also thank the staff at Epoch of Brewster Cobb Unit for the care and compassion given to Christina and her family during her final weeks.
Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend visiting hours from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at Nickerson Funeral Home, 87 Crowell Rd, Chatham, with a memorial service at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at Forest Hills Cemetery in Boston.
