Sarajane Truby Warren, wife, mom, and arts educator passed away on October 23, 2022 at age 78 at her summer home on Cape Cod in Chatham, Massachusetts surrounded by her family after a long and very determined struggle against cancer.
Born in East Orange, New Jersey and raised in nearby Morristown, Sarajane was the daughter of the late Irvin Wilson Truby, an executive at the Prudential Insurance Company, and Janet Baldwin Truby. Her historic childhood home housed Washington’s troops in the late 1700s during the Revolutionary War. Her father and mother were actively interested in antiques and Americana which filled their home, sparking Sarajane’s lifelong passion for antiques and collectibles. Sarajane’s quest for the perfect antique was relentless; she spent many Saturdays of her life up very early to seek treasured finds at weekend sales. Her love ran so deep that she operated her own antiques businesses in Putnam, Connecticut and at Antiques By The Bay in Brewster on Cape Cod for 25 years.
Sarajane earned her bachelor’s degree with honors from the Moore College of Art and Design in Philadelphia and pursued graduate studies at Rhode Island College. What followed was a career dedicated to arts education in the Providence, R.I. public schools for 35 years at Nathan Bishop Middle School and Providence’s exam school, Classical High School. Sarajane was a fierce supporter of her students, inspiring hundreds of students to pursue further education and their passions, especially careers in the arts.
Married for over 50 years to Edward Warren - also an educator and Dean at Nichols College in Dudley, Massachusetts - Sarajane was especially committed to hosting social and cultural events that benefitted the College community and its guests for decades.
Retiring from the Providence school system in 2002, Sarajane renewed her career in education at the college level teaching courses at Nichols for 20 years in sculpture and art history, especially The Art of the Renaissance, Modern Art, and American Art. Her classes at Nichols were always sought-after as she made the content fun and different, integrating the application of art history concepts with inventive projects.
Sarajane was an avid and accomplished gardener, a lover of mystery novels, the beach and her famous Oyster Pond sunsets, visiting museums, her Vero Beach Supper Club, interior design, and antiquing and bargain hunting with her daughter Allison. Growing and cultivating her varied collections brought her joy. She had a sharp wit and was known to crack an especially smart joke. She was a gatherer of people. In recent years she especially enjoyed extensive travel to Europe and Asia to experience the architecture and art she taught about for so many years.
Sarajane loved people. She is survived by her husband Edward and her daughter Alli and her many, many friends gathered from every corner and activity she touched. Sarajane will be dearly missed.
A celebration of Sarajane’s life will be held Saturday, October 29th in Chatham Massachusetts at the Nickerson Funeral home, 87 Crowell Road. Calling hours will be from 12 Noon – 2:00 P.M. with a gathering at the Warren home to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod’s Access program which opens doors to arts and culture for children facing economic challenges: 396 Main Street, Suite 10 Hyannis, Massachusetts 02601. https://artsfoundation.org/support/
