Beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend, Thomas Putnam Hutchinson died after walking on a beautiful Cape Cod evening in Chatham, MA on July 24. Born in Boston in 1937 to Ruth and Rayner Hutchinson, Tom attended Berkshire School and later the Duke University School of Engineering, where he was President of Sigma Chi. Tom was Vice President at Cabot Cabot & Forbes and became a partner at Boston Properties, both industrial and commercial real estate firms. Tom married Carol Lovell in 1964 and they settled in Marblehead, MA. Tom served on the Vestry of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church and together he and Carol ran the church youth group taking young people on ski, hike and bike trips across New England. They enjoyed fun nights at the Gut N Feathers badminton club and warm days sailing on the water from the Eastern Yacht Club. Tom took over an industrial park project with Boston Properties and relocated to the Washington area with his family. Together Tom and Carol lovingly restored a 1774 farmhouse in Crownsville, Maryland. They were members of the Annapolis Yacht Club and spent a great deal of time enjoying the Chesapeake Bay. Tom served on the Severn River Trust whose mission was to preserve and protect the wetlands. A life-long Dukie, Tom was a Duke Basketball fanatic and could often be found wearing his Duke hat with pride on game days. He travelled to watch his children’s high school and college lacrosse games up and down the east coast. Tom grew up spending summers in Chatham beginning in 1952. Tom and Carol retired to Cape Cod and together they remained active in the community bringing the Chatham Orpheum Theater back to Main Street. He worked for the Town of Chatham as a Deputy Shellfish Warden which kept him close to the water and in tune with tides on the Cape. Grandfather to six, Tom loved to travel to watch his grandchildren perform on the field and stage. Surviving are his wife Carol Lovell Hutchinson of Chatham, MA, son Chris Hutchinson (wife Kim) of Marblehead, MA, daughter Courtney Hutchinson Hundley (husband Brooks) of Washington, DC and six grandchildren, Stewart, Benjamin, Jamie, Russell, Caroline and Katherine and beloved dog, Grace.
