Ben was born in Hamilton County. His parents, the late Benjamin Harrison Gross and Jessie Brown Gross, were public school teachers. After graduating from Birchwood High School, he received a B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of Chattanooga and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Tennessee.
He was employed for eight years as a research chemist by Chattem Chemicals and for 34 years a member of the faculty of the Chemistry Department of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. From 1964 to 1990 he served as head of the department.
Ben enjoyed teaching and shared his research interests in hydrogen bonding and Raney catalysts with students and faculty colleagues. His contributions to UTC were recognized by appointment as a Guerry Professor in 1975, recipient of the UT National Alumni Association Awards in 1972 and 1998, and named the 1988 Tennessee Professor of the Year in 1988 by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education.
He served on the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Air Pollution Control Board from 1969 to 1980, coordinated workshops for high school science teachers, and in retirement, was a construction volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and served as an election official for Concord Precinct 1.
Ben was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and for 17 years as the teacher of the Alert Bible Class. He served a term on the executive board of Baptists Today.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Helen Bellamy Gross; sons, Andrew Gross of San Jose, California and Michael (Aimee) Gross of Cary, NC; grandchildren, Amelia, Maya, Alexander and Patric.
A memorial service will be held Monday, August 7, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church (401 Gateway Ave., Chattanooga, TN 37402) with Dr. Thomas Quisenberry officiating. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. prior to the service in Narthex. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery.
