

He was a member of Ridgedale Baptist Church and the Friendship Sunday School Class. He was a graduate of Central High School class of 1941 and retired from Standard Coosa-Thatcher Co. after more than 40 years of service. Foster received his Bachelor’s degree from University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 1971. He served in the Army Air Force from 1942–1945.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years (Virginia Mathes) his parents (Katie and Jay Mathes ) and sisters (Gladys and Frances).
He is survived by his son Foster Mathes Jr. and wife Lynn of Orlando, FL; granddaughters Heather Jenkinson and husband, John of Knoxville, TN; Allison Pierce and husband, Lee of Ringgold, GA; greatgrandsons Alex Pierce and Benjamin Pierce of Ringgold, GA and greatgranddaughter Samantha Jenkinson of Knoxville; sister-in-law Dottie Womack of Chattanooga, and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the East Brainerd Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist with Dr. Bill Owens officiating followed by burial in National Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Friendship Sunday School Class. The family will receive friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Wednesday and 10 – 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
