She was preceded in death by her husband, Max Sr.; her sister, Clara August; brother, Ralph Williams; and son, Jason.
She is survived by her sons, Larry (Veronica), Max Jr., and Tim (Beth); her beloved grandchildren, Daniel and Dana; and a host of good friends, especially her “sisters”, Clarisse Brackett and Peggye Ford.
Also left behind was her extended family from her sister Clara August in Atlanta. She loved her nieces Cathy and Linda and nephews Lee (Cindy) and John. For many years the Augusts and Ortegas celebrated Thanksgiving together and created wonderful memories.
She was born on August 6, 1934, in Birmingham, AL to Ralph and Peggy Williams and moved to Memphis, TN in childhood. It was in Memphis that she met her husband Max, married and began her family. She was with Max around the Southeast as he was a contract draftsman and moved from one assignment to another. In 1966 he began work at TVA and they and the four boys moved to East Ridge where she lived until her death.
She was at times a crossing guard at Lutheran School, a bookkeeper and phlebotomist. She went back to school and became a histology technician, working at Hutcheson Memorial for Dr. Elrod for many years. She was no good at sitting around and was active her entire life at one thing or another.
She joined Good Shepherd Lutheran Church when the family moved to Chattanooga and was an active member there for the next 58 years. She will be missed by her friends in the Cancer Caps ministry, the Tuesday Bible Study, and the LWML. She was also a Master Gardener and loved to garden in her later years.
There will be a Visitation on Friday, November 8, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 822 Belvoir Avenue at 12:00pm with a service to follow.
In lieu of flowers, make donations to Good Shepherd or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to commemorate her life.
