Richard “Dick” Young, 84, passed away Monday, June 22, 2015 at the Life Care Center of Collegedale due to complications following kidney failure. Richard was the adopted son of Lois and Clark Young of Fort Wayne, Indiana. A stand-out athlete, he led his high school basketball team to the Indiana state championship and signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as a third baseman upon graduation. Mr. Young subsequently joined the US Air Force and was stationed in Washington, DC where he attended George Washington University and fulfilled his dream of playing basketball in a nationally ranked program while earning a degree in Chemistry. While in Washington, Richard met his wife of 59 years, Lucille R. Young, and they were wed in 1955. Mr. Young began his career with the National Bureau of Standards and later joined the Thiokol Corporation where he rose to the position of National Sales Director. In 1980, he moved to Chattanooga where he held executive positions with Synair Corporation and the Arnco Corporation. A sports enthusiast, he was a die-hard fan of the Washington Redskins and excelled at golf. An avid reader, Richard possessed an extensive library of works of history, art, literature and biography with a special emphasis on the World War II era. Also, an accomplished chef, he equally enjoyed a gourmet meal with fine wine or a bushel of steamed crabs with his favorite cocktail, a Rob Roy, while debating with family or friends politics, science, sports, or whatever subject was at hand. Mr. Young was a member of the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE) where he served as Chairman of the Chattanooga chapter for seven years.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lucille, his son Brian and his wife, Amy, and their three sons Alex, Zack, and Eric.
