Edward Slaby passed away in his sleep on February 28, 2024. Beloved husband of 47 years of Linda (née Gross) Slaby. Ed and Linda recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of their meeting and first date (snow skiing) two days later. Dear son of the late Laddie and Anna (née Ourednik) Slaby. Caring brother of Ronald (deceased) and Raymond (Marcia) Slaby. Loving uncle of Chris (Sandy) Slaby and Tracy (Jim) Musgrave; Annmarie (deceased) and Greg Slaby; Sean and Brian (Cindy) Brosnahan, Meghan (Ian) Orlins and Tarah (Keith) Heller; and Aaron (Lacy) and Amiel Gross (Audrey Greenberg); great uncle and treasured friend of many. U.S. Navy Veteran.
Ed worked at the Warner & Swasey Company for many years in several capacities including research and development. He made many lifelong friends through the apprentice program at W&S and, over the years, continued to form enduring friendships that began in animal shelters, automobile racetracks, coffee shops etc. In later years, he began working on a horse farm and continued for 10 years until age 65. He had grit that he drew on to get through haymaking on hot summer days and other life challenges. Ed loved to think outside the box to find solutions to problems whether at work, at home or maintaining a myriad of daily driver cars and sports cars he owned over the years. An elementary school teacher pegged him right when she bestowed on him a "Good Thinker Award". As his work and life experiences progressed, Ed relished the opportunity to mentor and encourage others and was delighted to observe their success and growth.
From a young age, Ed thrived on being outdoors, immersed in nature, whether fishing, hiking, flying model airplanes, camping, skiing, playing with one of his beloved black labs or watching a beautiful sunset with his wife. Ed loved country living starting out on the former Eaton estate in Northfield, then moving to a century home overlooking the Grand River in West Farmington and finally enjoying a semi-rural life in Chesterland for many years. Perhaps related to being left-handed, Ed dabbled in creative pursuits including painting, photography and woodworking. His musical interests were eclectic and continued to develop over the years as new genres came on the scene.
Outstanding memories included a dream trip to France with Linda to celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary and attending his first World Series game (the Indians won!) in 2016, thanks to his season-ticket holding nephew Greg and sister-in-law Marcia. Several of his friends have fittingly described him as a Renaissance Man with wide interests and hobbies.
Above all, Ed cherished his wife and other family members and he will be deeply missed by all who loved him.
