Obaseki in Nigeria, specifically Benin city at Eben street. As he was only 5 years old when his
father died, he learned to value family from an early age. After primary school he attended
Western Boys High School and afterward worked briefly at Federal Government Girl’s College
in Benin City.
Benson relocated to America in 1982 in search of better opportunities with the help of Iyobosa
Obaseki. All of his dreams and ideas of America fully motivated his life choices once he reached
US soil. He knew education was a must and quickly set off to become a CPA, starting of at Loop
College now Harold Washington University and continuing on to graduate from Chicago State
University with a Bachelors in accounting in 1987. It was often joked about that during his
graduation many of his peers asked him what he was doing in the procession line and he proudly
announced that he was graduating as they looked on in disbelief.
Benson was a trend setter. Many would be surprised to know just how much he fully enjoyed his
early years in the United States participating in activities like Tae Kwan Do, developing his skills
in tennis, and exploring his love of music. Many do not know the major role he played in
bringing Victor Waifo to America.
Benson enjoyed his youth, but when it was time to settle down and become a responsible young
man he chose Aiwuyo Rita Obaseki and they were wed in Nigeria in December 1992. The
couple bore 3 beautiful children - daughter Eghe Sarah Obaseki and sons Osaratein Lloyd
Obaseki and Nosadeba Joshua Obaseki. After graduating from Chicago State University, he went
on to be an auditor for the City of Chicago but soon after decided to go into business with his
good friend 1998. As the business grew, they became known as the go to accountants in the
African community. With time, the two ventured off and went on to have seperate lucrative
accounting firms. Benson founded Obaseki and Associates located at 4552 N. Broadway in 2002
and is Benson’s lasting legacy and contribution to the community.
Other community contributions include being the chairman of Akugbe Oretin credit union and
being the vice president of Akugbe Oretin club of Chicago in the early 2000s.
He was not only a father who fiercely loved his Children but an uncle, an advisor, a helper, and a
counselor to everyone and anyone. He had the unique ability to be what you needed him to be at
any point in time. He took life easy and enjoyed even the tiniest of life’s offerings never taking
anything for granted.
Although he had battled serious health issues as early as 2001, he continued to carry himself with
poise and dignity. Many took for granted the resilience with which he displayed throughout his
life and so his departure from this earth on May 7, 2019 was a shock . He will be remembered
and loved far beyond his years as he lives on in the hearts of all that loved him.
