If I could only choose one word to describe Diane it would be laughter, whether she was telling a story or listening to a story.

The Train Gang misses her dearly. She lives in our hearts and memories.

Diane and I met in the 1980's at the University of Chicago where we both worked.  She was a wonderful colleague and friend. I have happy memories of our trip to Ravinia Park, our long chats and your VW Beetle. Thank you for always making me laugh and being a dear friend. I miss you, Diane. Rest in Peace. 





I'm Jo, one of Diane's Train Gang friends. Since 2001 we've had one wonderful meal after another. We met on the Metra Electric and commuted between Hyde Park and the Loop. A 15-20 minute train ride is not long enough for women who really like each other to catch up. Diane suggested that we plan a dinner. We had so much fun we scheduled another dinner two months later. So Diane was the founding Mother of our group. It won't surprise you that she was fearless. We ordered octopus one evening which Diane had never had. Of course it was the first item she tried and she loved it. We planned future dinners around octopus. I miss her so much. The Train Gang shared that looking forward to our next dinner helped us through the pandemic. When we can meet for dinner we will celebrate Diane and order her favorite foods.

Diane was a wonderful person. We had so many great laughs. She was a kind sole. She loved to talk about her children and grandchildren. She always was up for any type of adventure! I’m sorry I didn’t keep in touch these last few years but I will cherish the memories I have in my heart..

There are no words to express how sad I am, this wasn’t suppose to happen. Thank you sister for taking me under your wing as a small child. You and Don were my ideals. I where Chanel to this day because of you.  Wished you had shared more in the last years but I enjoyed our calls. You will always be in heart.  Mary

Diane was a much admired colleague and friend. I join with many others in mourning her passing.


I worked with Diane for many years in the Department of History at the University of Chicago.  She was honest, down-to-earth, and no nonsense.  She was also one of the kindest people I have ever known.  I had just sent her an email on January 26, saying  that we needed to get together once the snow melted and eat at Horse Thief Hollow in Bridgeport—a favorite place of hers.  I only wish I had sent that message a few weeks before.   Life is fleeting.   Rest in peace, dear one.

Grammie, I love you and miss you so much. You were ever present in my life as well as my brother’s, cousin’s, aunt’s, uncle’s, and mother’s. Every day I think of you and the great memories, meals, and laughs we shared. Turning on to my street and seeing your car in my driveway always made me happy because it meant a day I’d get to talk to you. You were an amazing mother and grandmother, and I couldn’t have asked for a better grandmother than the one I had. Love you so much, tell grandpa the patriots are looking great for me!
