Edward T Moy

Edward T. Moy was born in 1936 in the village of Buck Hong Li, China. Eddie, as he was fondly called, was the youngest child of You Hoi Moy and Nghue How Liang. Eddie was one of five children who attended On Fun Central Elementary School and On Fun Junior High School. His father was the village official at that time.

Eddie was born into a line of adventurous travelers. His grandfather arrived in Washington, DC, United States during late the 1800’s not knowing a word of English. It is believed that his grandfather worked on part of the transcontinental railroad. His grandfather later moved to Chicago where he setup a successful laundromat on the corner of Kimball and Lawrence in Chicago. His family brought Eddie to the United States from China after the war. Eddie and Mee Loon, Joanne’s mother, lived together in Hong Kong for a short period of time before coming to the United States. Once in Chicago, he attended and graduated from Roosevelt High School.

Eddie was drafted into the US Army for two years after high school. Thereafter, his brother Gem and the GI bill enabled him to attend Northeastern University, Boston. In 1965 he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. From there he started a successful career at IBM where he worked until his retirement on programmer languages like COBOL.

Shortly after graduating from college and starting his career, Eddie was introduced to Young, his first wife. They got married in 1967. Joanne’s mother introduced them and prepared Young for her first date with Eddie by cutting Young’s hair. Young was so embarrassed by the butchered haircut that she hid under the basement stairs when Eddie arrived to pick her up for their date. They eventually laughed it off and became best of friends. He and Young had a passionate and dedicated relationship to one another. Often times, he’d walk to Swedish Covenant Hospital to pick her up from work. She worked as a nurse at the hospital. They were married for 18 years until her passing.

Eddie was an avid runner who knew how to stay fit. Of course, he was delighted by good food, friends and family too. He liked to enjoy all kinds of foods but his favorite was Chinese. The more the better. He used to tell his nurses he was going out for a fresh fish, and they wanted pictures to see what he ate. He took pleasure in talking about how he ate the whole fish, and he did it with a hearty smile.

In 1991, he married June Eng, also known as June Yong, also known as June Yee and lastly known as June Moy. No children were produced from their union.

Always a world traveler like his grandfather, Eddie has been to dozens of countries throughout the world, even taking a cruise to Antarctica.

A man with a great sense of humor, Eddie was always joking around and telling stories about the Moy family history. His humor and kindheartedness was demonstrated at both nursing homes where he was rehabbing over the past few years. Eddie became a victim of COVID and was born into eternity on May 16, 2020.

We will miss him, his humor and his stories. Our love will always be with you Eddie. May the wind be your guide and love always be in your heart.
