Letterio Saccà, age 88, born in Palermo, Sicily, to the late Isabella and Mario Saccà, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2023. Beloved marito of 60 years to Olga Saccà (nee Taccia). Loving papà of Isabella, late Mario, and Emanuela (Ryan). Cherished nonno of Annalisa and Luca. Dear fratello of late Ester, Giovanna, late Lilla, late Matilde, late Gaetano, late Esmeralda, and Amalia. Devoted zio to many nieces and nephews.
Born into a large and boisterous Sicilian family, Letterio was an inquisitive and mischievous child. He enjoyed raising animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and pigeons. Gifted with a quick and creative mind, he learned about construction alongside his father and as a young man he specialized his studies in the field of architectural drafting. After serving in the Italian military, he began his professional career designing and building residential complexes that still stand today, on the outskirts of Palermo.
In May of 1961, while on a train ride, he met the love of his life, Olga, whom he married in 1963. They were blessed with three beautiful children and spent 60 wonderful years together. In 1981, Olga and Letterio, experienced the death of their son Mario, a loss too great to recover from.
In 1977, life’s journey brought him and his family from the shores of the Mediterranean to those of Lake Michigan. While in Chicago, he held many different employs from working for the Italian Trade Commission to independent design work, and finally as a self-employed Notary Public specializing in documents for the Italian-American community.
Throughout his life, his passion and focus were his family, not only immediate but extended, as he became a father figure to many nieces and nephews. He was, at his core, a caretaker and protector. A rock you could ALWAYS depend on.
A life-long avid reader, artist, and skilled writer, he dispensed many words of advice. Although exacting and precise, he was always affectionate and had a wonderful sense of humor. This was best evidenced in the joyful play with all the children in our family, but especially with his grandchildren. Annalisa and Luca were truly the greatest joys of his life, rejuvenating him in his later years.
Whether briefly or for long, all are grateful for the opportunity to have known him.
