Dear Corriere Family, We're forever thankful for meeting Patrick, if only briefly. His exuberant, funny and captivating conversations, kind acts and impeccable orgazational skills left a forever mark on our hearts. Please accept our deepest sympathy

"I can't believe I'm writing this and I've put it off because words can't describe how much I'm going to miss you Patrick. You came into my life when I was a kid really in my twenties. I was just starting to form my identity as a gay man at a time when Society was not kind always to our community. But none of that mattered to us because we had each other. You were 10 years older and seemed like an adult who had his life together. You were stable, thoughtful, funny, gregarious, and always ready to have a good time. You embraced life without fear or hesitation. You are always ready to meet new people and have new experiences. You were intelligent, articulate, and we could talk for hours. We could dance for hours back then too. And laugh. There was always laughter in your home and over the phone.  When I moved away, I would call to catch up because even if it was 30 years it felt like nothing changed. Our friendship didn't dim and my love for you only grew stronger. You are always there for me, ready to listen and talk about the mundane from what was new on Netflix to sharing our own stories of heartache. I always felt like Chicago was my hometown even though I left 31 years ago. It's because of the people and the friendships that have endured. We were friends for 40 years and at 61 I try to explain to people that there will never be anyone in my life like you again. I'm grateful for the 40 years we had. I'm grateful that I was able to keep my connection to Chicago. You gave me a key to your home and your heart so that I could enter any time and stay as long as I needed to. You hosted me and fed me. You cared for me like family . I feel like I lost a piece of my history with you gone. Only you would know why we call each other Bubbala. And you, Bubalah, will remain in my heart forever."

I have  known this charming, kind and entertaining man since 1986.  We had  a mutual respect and a fraternal love.  We shared many fun times including  watching his favorite team The Bears.  I always admired his bright spirit and lack of complaining despite medical issues.  He was always so hospitable, saying “mi casa, su casa.”  He loved his deceased father, family and always spoke so highly of his beloved sister Rosemary.

Patrick and I faced the challenge of our beloved high school closing and adjusting to a very different new one. During that difficult time—and in later years—Patrick was always a great sounding board. I fondly remember when he accompanied me on a two-hour drive to my first job interview after I graduated from college. Even though it was a crummy job, Patrick reassured me I wouldn’t be there long and that finding a better job would be easier afterward. He was right.

Over the years, we built a deep trust and a strong friendship. I greatly admired Patrick’s honesty, humor, and empathy. He was always kind.

I am very sad to hear that Patrick has died. I met him at Merlo Library and we became friends.  We shared dinners together at restaurants since we both enjoyed good food. He always enjoyed talking about his family and friends.  I am taking comfort in that he is at peace.

I am honored to have been Patrick’s personal trainer for the past nearly five years. He was my only house call. Such a refreshing change from the gym I routinely worked from! Twice a week I took the elevator to the 15th floor to collect him, whereupon we rode back down together to the 4th floor where the exercise room was located. My Saturday treat was a Frango mint that he always gave me when I arrived at his door! We enjoyed each other’s company, and the hour flew by as we compared notes on the news of the day, and filled each other in on notable events in our lives since last we’d met. Patrick mentioned his sister Rosemary so frequently that I came to feel I knew her! Brother and sister routinely shared holidays going out to dinner. I took vicarious pleasure in hearing about where they went and what they each ordered off the menu. Patrick and I both loved films both old and new, and he was eager to lend me DVDs from the extensive collection that lined his shelves. On a convenient evening during the past two Christmas seasons, I drove over to get Patrick, then picked up a third party from a retirement home, and the three of us then headed into the northern burbs to look at the Christmas lights on the mansions. It was developing into a Christmas tradition. He was always dressed nice when I came for him, as if we were heading to a party, and always warmly thanked me when I dropped him back home. This year my car is sadly going to be missing one warm and joyful body. But Patrick’s spirit will be present to help keep us warm. Damn, I’m going to miss that little guy more than I can say.
