Dear Bob and Terry,
'Uncle Bugs' was a sweetheart of a man. He was my god-father and lifelong best friend to my Dad, John 'Tommy' Atkinson. Bugs and Dad played on the same softball team (The Saxons) in the 40's. They were members of the American Legion and both our families would always attend the Legion's annual summer picnics and Christmas parties together.  I remember your parents and mine would love to get together and play pinochle. Your Dad was always so happy and fun to be around. Whenever our Dad's were together I remember lots and lots of laughter. I'm sure they loved to reminisce about the shenanigans they pulled off when they were teenagers. They were so happy to be together.  My deepest sympathy goes out to you, Bob and Terry and to both your families. May the wonderful memories you have of your Dad help to get you through this sad time.

Hi Bob and Terry,
Sorry we haven't stayed in touch over the years.  Your Dad was one of my favorite people in the world when I was a youngster.  Uncle Bugs took me to my first major league baseball game, a doubleheader at Wrigley, and he taught me early that you were either a Cubs fan or a White Sox fan--not both.  Even in Minnesota, to this day, it is only the Cubs when I talk Chicago baseball.  I will remember him fondly until the day I die for helping to create my lifelong love for baseball.  Wishing you both the best and hoping you are handling his passing as well as you can.

Hi Terry and Bob.  I'm your Mom's cousin.  Jim Hedin called me about your father's passing. Your Dad and Mom were at my house in Minnesota for dinner a few times and I always had banana cream pie for dessert because I knew your Dad loved it.  I stayed at their place in Allyn while we were celebrating Lyle and Viv's anniversary. Your Mom slept on the couch and your Dad slept at a neighbor's so we could have their bed.  We had a wonderful time because they were so gracious and fun.  I'll always have wonderful memories of the two of them.

There are no adequate words to express how I feel for you at this time.  Your Dad was a wonderful, gentle man with a great smile.  (He also knew good fudge when he tasted it...a fellow chocolate lover!)  You're in my thoughts and prayers.  Know that I'm here to help you through this time in any way you need.

I was saddened to learn of your loss. Your family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

My father joined the National Guard when he was 18. In September of 1940, the Federal Government nationalized all state national guards, effectively making them part of the US military.

He served stateside defending ports  and airbases. After war was declared in December of 1941, he was assigned to the 202nd coastal artillery batallion. 
The Japanese invaded the islands stretching westwards from Alaska into the Pacific. Dad was sent to protect Alaska from further Japanese expansion. 
He spent over two years on a barren, windswept island called Adak. Late in 1944, the US Army asked for volunteers to go to Europe to fight the Germans, and my Dad signed up. They put him in the 36th (Texas) infantry division and sent him to Germany. He only lasted about two and a half months before he was wounded, but not before he managed to capture 11 Germans. He was pretty proud of that. The wound he received is referred to as a 'million dollar wound', that is, one that is serious enough so that you cannot function as a soldier, (the wound was to his right hand) but not serious enough to permanently disable you.

Dad loved sports. He played them as long as he could, with a fair degree of skill. He carried his golf bag on his shoulder until he was 85, and then decided that pulling a cart wasn't so bad.

I am truly sorry for your loss.  Although I never met your dad, I felt like I knew a little something about him through all the funny stories and anecdotes you shared with me.  He sounded like a wonderful person.   I do know, that whenever I bake a carrot cake, I will think of him!
