Educator, musician, wife, and mother, Gladys passed peacefully at the Waverly Seniors Village in Chilliwack, B.C. In her 90th year. She was born in Kelty, Scotland, the only child of James and Janet Pryde (nee Pollock). Gladys overcame early physical challenges which required pioneering bone graft surgery. After completing her studies at Beath High School, Cowdenbeath, she went on to receive a Master of Arts degree in English Literature from Edinburgh University. Gladys also showed talent as a pianist, studying throughout her youth and earning a Licentiate Diploma. She also enjoyed traveling with friends, and she traveled widely over her lifetime.
In 1954 Gladys emigrated to Canada, finding work as an English teacher at Hamilton High School in North Vancouver. It was there that she met her husband, Roy Hunter. They settled in Chilliwack in 1957and raised two children, Neil (Barbara) and Ailsa (George).
As a performer and longtime piano teacher, Gladys instilled a love of music in many young people, starting with her own children and extending to her numerous students. Her support of Neil and Ailsa's studies included serving as accompanist and driving thousands of kilometres to lessons and performances.
Gladys is survived by her husband and children, and her loving grandson Dylan Hunter. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Sharon Hunter and Ida Paddock, her cousin and friend Anne Docherty, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and infant son Colin.
The family wishes to extend their profound thanks to the staff of Waverly Seniors Village. A very special thanks to the Sargent family: Jody, Christine, Nick, Meaghan, and Madison for their love and support over the last 30 years.
