She grew up in the small prairie town of Wiseton, SK, with her loving parents, Bill and Betty Sucee. As an only child her friends were very special to her. She had a gift for making people feel welcome and gathered many friends each place she lived.
During her first teaching post at a small country school, she fell in love with a young farmer and married her first husband, Fred Smith. They were blessed with four daughters, and settled on their farm near Sonningdale, SK, with their growing family. Along with raising her girls and farming, Dorothy continued teaching, and also completed her Bachelor of Education. As the girls married, they gained 4 sons-to-love, followed by the grandchildren. In the early 1980's they made the move to BC to semi-retire, but sadly 5 years later Fred passed away.
Her love of learning led Dorothy to enter Regent College to pursue a Masters in Christian Studies- Counseling. She not only received her Masters degree but also met Ron Thicke, another retired student whom she loved and married on their graduation day. They now had her four daughters, Ron's four adult children, and all their spouses and growing families to love and visit. They did not settle in North Vancouver for long. Their love for missions led them first to Tanzania, followed soon after with another cross-cultural teaching experience. They enjoyed several trips across the country and around the world visiting their families. At home Dorothy continued her missions calling through Open Door, Refocus, and their church and outreach ministries.
As Ron's health declined they downsized to a condo in Fort Langley, enjoying walks along the canal. Since Ron's passing a few years later, she has been loved and cared for by her family, the care communities of Hallmark in Abbotsford, and Cascades in Chilliwack. We extend our heartfelt thanks to these special communities.
Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Betty Sucee, her first husband Fred Smith, her second husband Ron Thicke, and a dear son of her heart, Mike Thicke. She is survived by her daughters Kathy (Rick), Shelley (Archie), Karen (Mike), Donna (Eric); and Brian (Janice), Steve (Cathy), daughter-in-law Anne (Mike Thicke's wife), Sally (Bev), as well as eighteen grandchildren and a growing number of great grandchildren, all who love her and will dearly miss her.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life honouring Dorothy on August 15 at Woodlawn Mt Cheam Funeral Home. Details can be found below.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to one of the charities Dorothy supported, which are also listed below.
