With love and fond memories, we celebrate the life of Gary Fulton, who passed away peacefully on October 18, 2026, at Abbotsford Regional Hospital. Born in New Westminster, BC, in December 1945, Gary lived a full and meaningful life filled with family, friendship, adventure, and a love for the great outdoors.
A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Gary's greatest pride and joy was always his family.
Gary was predeceased by his parents, J. Robert (Bob) and Loretta Fulton. He leaves behind his loving wife of 52 years, Janice; son Travis Fulton; daughter T. Alicia Douglas (Gary); grandchildren Haylie (Zac), Chelsea, Rylan, Kane, and Milena; and great-grandchildren Walker, Callan, and Oakley. He is also fondly remembered by his brother John (Sherry) Fulton, nephew Chris, nieces Keri and Jennifer, and many lifelong friends.
Gary and Janice built a wonderful life together, raising their children on a seven-acre farm in Langley from 1974 to 2005 before eventually settling in Chilliwack. Gary appreciated the simple pleasures of home, particularly the beautiful mountain views, and the deer and birds that visited. He was happiest surrounded by the people and places he loved.
Known for his gentle nature, generosity, patience, and wonderful sense of humour, Gary had a special way of making those around him feel loved and supported. He was always ready with gentle encouragement, a helping hand, or a little good-natured teasing. His family could always count on his steady guidance, kindness, and unwavering support.
Some of his most cherished moments were spent in his beloved "man cave," working on projects with his grandchildren. While many of those projects never quite reached completion, finishing them was never really the point. The time spent together, sharing stories, laughter, and a little tinkering, created memories that will be treasured.
Gary enjoyed a rewarding 35-year career with the City of Vancouver's Engineering Department, most recently in the Water Design Branch. Retirement didn't mean slowing down as he continued putting his extensive knowledge and experience to good use through his own Cross Connection Control business.
Gary also dedicated countless hours to helping others. A longtime member of North Shore Rescue and a founding member of Central Fraser Valley Search & Rescue, he participated in hundreds of ground, air, marine, and scuba searches. As though that wasn't enough, he also found time to serve as a volunteer firefighter with Langley Township. His willingness to lend a hand, often in challenging circumstances, reflected his generous spirit and quiet dedication to others.
An enthusiastic outdoorsman, Gary was a longtime member of the Mission Rod & Gun Club and later the Chilliwack Rod & Gun Club. He enjoyed sharing his knowledge and passion with others, particularly junior members learning outdoor skills. His interest in shooting began during his high school years at New Westminster High School and grew into a lifelong passion that he proudly passed along to his children and grandchildren.
In his younger years, few things made Gary happier than heading out hunting with his buddies. He always returned with stories of their adventures, sometimes more memorable than the hunt itself, including one occasion when he rescued a drowning deer from a log boom. Hunting, fishing, firearms, reloading ammunition, and just about anything connected to the outdoors remained important parts of his life.
A true BC boy at heart, Gary had a deep appreciation for his home province, its natural beauty, and its history. It wasn't unusual to find several books about different British Columbia communities spread across the kitchen table, each waiting its turn to be explored.
Although perfectly content enjoying everything BC had to offer, Gary eventually discovered that adventures beyond the provincial borders could be just as rewarding. After retirement, Janice managed to convince him to explore a little farther from home. Together, they travelled across Canada and ventured to the United Kingdom, Tahiti Islands, and New Zealand. Much to his surprise, he loved every adventure, creating even more wonderful memories along the way.
Above all else, Gary will be remembered for the way he lived and the love he shared. His warm smile, gentle teasing, endless patience, kindness, and unwavering devotion to his family made him truly special. He found happiness in life's simple moments, took pride in the accomplishments of those he loved, and left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Gary leaves behind a lifetime of wonderful memories, countless stories worth retelling, and a legacy of love, laughter, and generosity that will live on through his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A life well lived, a family well loved, and memories to treasure forever.
